PLU Knocks Off Texas Tournament Hosts, 61-56

GEORGETOWN, Tex. - Pacific Lutheran limited host Southwestern to just 16 first half points on 22 percent shooting on the way to a 61-56 victory on Tuesday in third-place game of the Southwestern University Invitational.

The Lutes (6-3) built a 26-16 halftime lead by out-scoring the Pirates in the paint, 14-2, and by scoring 14 points off of turnovers. Southwestern (3-7) was able to get untracked in the second half, opening the period with a 13-3 run and tying the score at 29-29 with 16:16 remaining. PLU replied with eight unanswered points and eventually took a 56-42 lead on Jen Sorensen's three-point basket with 5:53 to play before settling for the five-point victory.

Emily Voorhies earned all-tournament honors for PLU, following up her 14-point, nine-rebound effort from Monday's loss to Concordia (Wis.) with seven points and four rebounds against Southwestern.

Trinity Gibbons led the Lutes in scoring in this game with 13 points, and she also tallied five rebounds and four assists. Jordan Westering had a strong game off the bench for the Lutes with 12 points, including a trio of three-point field goals.

Jennifer Tindle scored 17 points for Southwestern to lead all scorers.

Both teams finished the game shooting 37 percent from the field, but the Lutes owned the rebound battle, 41-28.

Pacific Lutheran opens its Northwest Conference schedule at 6 p.m. this coming Friday when it hosts the Willamette Bearcats at Olson Auditorium.
