Saint Martin's Knocks Off Lutes, 77-57

LACEY - Pacific Lutheran cut a 14-point first half deficit to five points in the second half, but host Saint Martin's pulled away to finish with a 77-57 women's basketball victory over the Lutes on Thursday night.

PLU led 5-4 after a free throw by Sara Backstrom but found itself trailing 27-13 after SMU's Dara Zack hit a pair of free throws with 7:30 left in the opening half. The Lutes (4-2) battled back in the second half, reducing their deficit to five points for the last time at 43-38 on Jordan Westering's layup with 14:51 left in the game.

Saint Martin's (5-1) went on a 17-2 run late in the second half to open up a 76-54 lead with 1:50 remaining. Jamey Gelhar hit a pair of three-point shots and two free throws to highlight the run.

Backstrom scored a PLU career-high 13 points to lead the Lutes, who also got 10 points from Trinity Gibbons and 10 points and 10 rebounds from Emily Voorhies. Gibbons also contributed seven assists as the Lutes compiled 18 assists on 22 baskets.

For the Saints, Gelhar and Michelle Short both tallied 14 points.

Pacific Lutheran returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 13, when it hosts Evergreen State at 6 p.m. in Olson Auditorium.
