Sorensen Goes Bombs Away, Leads Lutes Past Northwest

PARKLAND - Jen Sorensen knocked down four three-point field goals on the way to 16 points to lead Pacific Lutheran to a 61-51 non-conference women's basketball victory over Northwest University on Saturday night in Olson Auditorium.

Sorensen, a 5-3 junior transfer from Tacoma Community College, shot 5-for-11 from the field, including 4-for-8 from long range, and also added four rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench for the Lutes (2-1). She hit consecutive three-point shots about six minutes into the second half as the Lutes rebounded from a 28-27 halftime deficit to take a 38-30 lead with 13:56 left to play.

Northwest (1-3) whittled its deficit to a single point, 47-46, on a three-point shot by Erika Hornyak, but the Lutes responded with a 9-0 run, capped by another Sorensen trey from the left corner, to give PLU a solid 56-46 lead with 2:58 remaining.

Emily Voorhies scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half as the Lutes outscored the Eagles, 34-23, in the final 20 minutes. All six of Voorhies' six second half baskets resulted from PLU assists as the Lutes finished the game with 19 assists on 24 baskets. Trinity Gibbons tallied 12 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Lutes, who also got 10 points from Sara Backstrom. Nikki Scott led the Lutes with eight assists.

Dani Drivstuen paced the Eagles with 16 points, including 8-for-10 from the free throw line, and she and teammate Rachel Mitchell both had four assists. Hornyak added 12 points for Northwest.

The Lutes owned a 41-29 rebounding advantage with Melissa Richardson pulling down a game-high eight boards for the Lutes. PLU shot 43 percent for the game (24-for-56) compared to just 34 percent (16-for-47) for the Eagles.
