Concordia Gets Final Rally, Beats Lutes by 10

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. - In a game or runs, it was the host Concordia Cavaliers who put together the final scoring surge to defeat visiting Pacific Lutheran, 65-55, in a non-conference women's basketball game played Friday night at Cavalier Gymnasium.

The Cavaliers, now 2-1 for the season, used an 11-0 run inside the final five minutes to break away from a narrow 54-53 lead over the Lutes, who fell to 1-1 this season. That thin margin existed only because the Lutes, who at one time trailed by 16 points in the second half, got back into the game with their own 19-4 run.

Concordia had taken a 50-34 lead on a pair of free throws by Maryam Razavi with 13:12 remaining when the Lutes outscored the hosts by 15 points over the next eight-plus minutes. Jen Sorensen hit a trio of three point-baskets during the run, and when Trinity Gibbons hit another "trey" with 4:51 left, PLU had cut its deficit to 54-53.

That led the Concordia's final surge, and ultimately the Lutes didn't have an answer, going without a point until Gibbons hit a pair of free throws with eight seconds left in the game.

The teams battled for the lead through the opening 10 minutes, but when the Cavaliers went ahead 18-17, they had the lead for good. They opened up an 11-point lead at 34-23 on Kenna Borgmeier's two free throws with 36 seconds left in the half, and they eventually took a 34-25 advantage into the halftime break.

Emily Voorhies led the Lutes with 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Gibbons and Jordan Westering both contributed 11 points. Westering made 5-of-7 shots from the field, including her only three-point shot, in 18 minutes off the bench.

Danielle Clauson scored 18 points for the Cavaliers, who also got 11 points and six assists from Rebecca Gimeno and 10 points from Angela Gimeno.

The Lutes shot 35 percent from the field compared to 42 percent for the Cavaliers, and it was the host team that won the rebound battle, 41-31.

Pacific Lutheran returns to action at 8 p.m. Saturday when it hosts the Northwest University Eagles in Olson Auditorium.
