TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacifc Lutheran University men's tennis squad earned a clean sweep during doubles play, besting crosstown rival University of Puget Sound 6-3 on Saturday in the Lutes' home opener at the Sprinker Recreation Center.

"We came out very strong in doubles today and it really set the tone for us," said Head Coach John Cassens. "James Okubo and Niko Convento took the pressure off by winning their singles matches quickly to ensure the win."

PLU's (1-2, 1-1 Northwest Conference) Ryan Adams and James Okubo disposed of the Loggers' (0-4, 0-4 NWC) No. 1 tandem of Joe McRoberts and Chris Severt 8-2 while Niko Convento and Justin DeMattos cruised to the 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. John Woelfel and Chan Thourk completed the sweep, escaping with a hard fought 9-7 decision at No. 3.

Adams secured the win at No. 1 singles, disposing McRoberts, 7-6, 6-2, while Convento claimed the 6-2, 6-0, victory at No. 2 and Okubo rolled 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 3 position.

PLU returns to the court tomorrow morning, battling Linfield College at 10:30 a.m. inside Sprinker.
