Freshmen Score the Goals in 3-0 PLU Victory

Box Score

Ricky Morales

PARKLAND, Wash. - A trio of freshmen provided the goals and the defense was solid throughout the match as Pacific Lutheran defeated the visiting George Fox Bruins, 3-0, in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match played on a windy and rainy Saturday afternoon.

Ricky Morales scored his team-leading third goal of the season about 14 minutes into the match and Surafel Worku and Chad Kearns added second half tallies for the Lutes (3-5-1 overall, 1-2-1 conference). Sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Mangum did not need to make a save as the defense, anchored by junior center back Derek MacLean, limited the Bruins to just four shots.

Morales put the Lutes on the board at 13:32, taking a pass from Worku and dribbling across the box before firing home from about 12 yards out. The Lutes continued to pressure the Bruins (1-6-3 overall, 0-2-2 conference) and got their second reward at 64:37 when the same duo, Worku and Morales, teamed up for a goal. Morales worked the ball down the right wing and crossed to Worku, who slammed the ball into the goal from about 10 yards out for his second tally of the season. Kearns capped the scoring at 80:06 with his first goal, cracking home a short volley on a crossing pass from Peter Thomas.

George Fox goalkeeper Jake Maguire had little chance on any of the three PLU goals, and he was able to keep his team in the game with three saves as the Lutes peppered a total of 18 shots at goal. The Lutes owned an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks, all eight coming in the opening half.

Pacific Lutheran head coach John Yorke was able to bring 14 different players in off the bench.

The Lutes return to action at 2:30 p.m. Sunday when they host the Willamette Bearcats in another Northwest Conference contest.
