Lutes Battle Boxers to Scoreless NWC Draw

Box Score

FOREST GROVE - Pacific Lutheran and Pacific both displayed stellar defensive efforts Saturday at the teams played to a 0-0 double overtime tie in both teams' Northwest Conference men's soccer opener at Lincoln Park Stadium.

The Boxers (4-2-1, 0-0-1 NWC) outshot the Lutes, 22-9, and put 12 shots on goal, but found themselves stymied by PLU goalkeeper Daniel Mangum, who made 11 saves on the afternoon. The Pacific defense, meanwhile, stayed strong against nine shots on goal taken by the Lutes (2-3-1, 0-0-1 NWC). Pacific goalie Andrew Stevermer finished with seven saves in collecting his second shutout of the season.

The Lutes were limited to three first half shots with all of those coming on goal. Surafel Worku had two opportunities from within 10 yards in the 30th minute. His first attempt was stopped by a Pacific defender. The ball caromed right back to Worku, but his second attempt was saved by Stevermer. Spencer Augustin also had his opportunity in the 37th minute stopped by Stevermer, who leapt high to bring the ball down.

Worku had another golden opportunity for the Lutes in the 85th minute, burning past a pair of Pacific defenders to shoot from 15 yards out, which was saved by Stevermer.

Pacific had three shots in overtime, all in the opening period. PLU's only overtime shot came in the 107th minute.
