Second Half Struggles Doom Lutes in 3-1 Loss
SPOKANE, Wash. - Wisconsin-Whitewater broke open a halftime tie with a goal just four minutes into the second half and added another goal later in the period in taking a 3-1 men's soccer victory over Pacific Lutheran. The match was played Saturday afternoon at Whitworth University.
Whitewater scored the first goal at 22:44 with Steve Nashleanas finishing off an assist from Kyle Bast. The Lutes tied the match at 37:42 on a goal by freshman Spencer Augustin, his second of the season. Surafel Worku beat a defender down the right wing, hit a diagonal ball back across the middle, and Augustin was there to knock it into the goal.
PLU had another first half goal called back by an offside call, and that proved to be crucial when the Warhawks came out fast in the second period. It was Bast who scored his team's second goal at 48:44 on an assist from Luke Buchholz. Dan Montanye finished the scoring at 61:51 with Matt Gehn getting the assist.
Whitewater, 3-2 for the season, finished the match with 13 shots while the Lutes managed seven. Daniel Mangum had three saves for PLU while Kevin Spry had two saves in the Whitewater goal.
Pacific Lutheran, 2-3 this season, opens its Northwest Conference campaign at 2:30 p.m. next Saturday when it plays the Pacific Boxers in Forest Grove, Ore.
