Lutes Take Advantage of Early Own Goal to Beat Central, 2-0
Pacific Lutheran scored on an own goal just 11 seconds into the match and went on to defeat the Central College Dutch, 2-0, in a men's soccer match played Sunday at the PLU field.
Central goalkeeper Greg Foote missed the ball while trying to clear out a back pass from his defense and the ball rolled into the net to put the Lutes on top, 1-0, just 11 seconds into the contest. Pacific Lutheran scored the other goal at the 31:24 mark when Surafel Worku's shot just rolled across the line before a Central defender kicked the ball away. The assistant referee judged the ball to have fully crossed the line, much to the delight of the Lutes and to the dismay of the Central defenders. Jason Bjorgo started the play with a cross from the left wing, and Daniele Zaccagnini headed the ball down to Worku, who finished for his first goal of the season.
The statistics showed an evenly played match with Central (2-2-0) taking 17 shots to Pacific Lutheran's 13. Central reserve keeper Quincy Garner picked up all five of his team's saves in the second half, while Daniel Mangum came up with six saves in the PLU goal. The Lutes had six corner kicks to three for the Dutch, and both teams were whistled for 15 fouls.
Pacific Lutheran, (2-2-0) returns to action at 2:30 p.m. next Saturday when it plays Wisconsin-Whitewater at Whitworth University in Spokane.
