Beatty, Wall Pitch Lutes to Baseball Victories

WILSONVILLE, Ore. - Max Beatty and Scott Wall had strong outings on the mound on Saturday as Pacific Lutheran swept a pair of baseball games at the Cascade Northwest Challenge at Wilsonville High School.

Beatty pitched six shutout innings and Ryan Frost drove in six runs to lead Pacific Lutheran to an 11-3 win over Corban in the first game, and Wall went the distance in PLU's 5-2 victory over tournament host Concordia in the second contest.

Beatty, a sophomore from Vancouver, improved his pitching record to 2-0 this season, giving up just four hits and two walks while striking out six batters in six innings of work. Frost, a junior from Tumwater, hit a grand slam home run in the fifth inning and then drove in two more with a double, one of two he hit in the game, in the sixth.

The Lutes scored twice in the first inning, made it 3-0 with a run in the fourth, and then broke the game open with five-run fifth inning, highlighted by Frost's second home run of the year. They made it 11-0 with three runs in the sixth.

Beatty came out of the game at that point, with Kipp Godfrey, Nathan Shoup and Nic Delikat all getting one inning of work on the mound.

PLU finished the game with 12 hits, including three by Frost and leadoff hitter Jaron Iwakami, and two each by Brock Gates and Ryan Aratani.

Wall was impressive in the second game, going all nine innings and throwing just 94 pitches. He gave up just two earned runs on six hits while striking out eight and walking none.

His teammates staked him to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and both runs came with two outs. Iwakami led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. He scored on a double by Gates, who himself scored on Aratani's single.

Corey Moore led off the sixth with a double and eventually scored on Aratani's sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 before the Lutes added two runs in the seventh to make it 5-0. Nicholas Hall hit a double and scored on Alex Beal's two-bagger, and Beal came in on Moore's base hit.

Beal, Moore and Aratani all had a pair of hits to lead PLU's 11-hit attack.

Pacific Lutheran plays Oregon Tech and Concordia on Sunday to finish its tournament action.
